Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM)

A high-grade monazite vein deposit whose planned product is a concentrate grading more than 50% total rare earth oxides, from an in-situ resource grade of about 14.4%. Because monazite hosts thorium, the deposit carries a radioactivity question: the operator holds National Nuclear Regulator registration and has publicly discussed thorium as a potential nuclear fuel and radium-228 recovery for medical isotopes.

A January 2018 information memorandum gives Steenkampskraal Holdings 74% and a workers' trust 26%; Bora Mining Investments has since taken an undisclosed stake. Earlier listed associations were Rareco on the JSE Venture Capital Board until 2007 and Great Western Minerals Group from 2011 until a 2015 disposal during insolvency proceedings. Possibly stale: the only precise shareholding in a primary document dates from January 2018, and the Bora Mining Investments stake has never been quantified publicly. Further research needed.

Narrative

Steenkampskraal is a high-grade monazite deposit in South Africa's Western Cape, mined by an Anglo American subsidiary from 1952 to 1963 for monazite and thorium. The asset passed from Rare Earth Extraction Co. to Great Western Minerals Group in 2011, was sold in 2015 during Great Western's insolvency proceedings, and the holding company was renamed Steenkampskraal Holdings in 2016. The operating subsidiary left care and maintenance in 2024. The Industrial Development Corporation released the first of four funding tranches in September 2025 for a Phase 1 concentration plant, which broke ground in April 2026 with commissioning scheduled for August 2026. As of September 2026 the mine remains pre-production and pre-revenue.
