Rare Earth Salts (Beatrice, Nebraska)
A private Nebraska company separating rare earths by a patented electrochemical process at a demonstration plant in Beatrice, including terbium recovered from recycled fluorescent-lamp phosphor.
Points to check
Facts from the sources on this page that a reader should weigh before relying on the company's own figures.
- RES has not published a capacity or annual output figure. Its stated volumes are 'hundreds of kilograms' of NdPr (Aug 2023) and one 17.5 t lanthanum sale (before Apr 2023).
- The company's 'commercial scale production' release (22 Aug 2023) describes its Beatrice site as a 'commercial demonstration plant'.
- Offtake partners for Tb and Y are described only as 'domestic and international'. No buyer, volume or contract has been named.
- The planned 21 t/yr oxide / 20 t/yr metal expansion depends on DOE funding for a UND demonstration project; DOE's selection of that project for award negotiations (1 Jul 2026) does not name RES and, DOE states, is not a commitment to fund.
- RES is a private LLC with no published financial statements. Its DOE project funding flows through lead partners (Battelle in 2017, UND in 2023), and RES's own share is not disclosed.

Capacity
Each date below links to the document the figure came from. A capacity figure with no source is not on this page.
| What | Figure | Status | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two separation lines at Beatrice: a light rare earth concentrate line and a recycled lamp-phosphor line | Not disclosed. The lines were 'in the process of commissioning' and expected to operate Q2 2023. No throughput (in) or output (out) rate has been published. | Pilot scale | Apr 2023 |
| NdPr produced from light rare earth concentrate (output) | 'hundreds of kilograms of high-purity NdPr' (cumulative, as stated; no period given) | Historical | Aug 2023 |
| Lanthanum sale (output) | One commercial sale of 17.5 t separated lanthanum at 99.95-99.99% purity (before Apr 2023). BusinessWire (Aug 2023) says 'many metric tons of high-purity lanthanum' produced previously. | Historical | Apr 2023 |
| Planned MREC refining and metallization at Beatrice (UND project) | Feed in: MREC from Underwood (233 t/yr) and Center (134 t/yr), 367 t/yr combined (arithmetic), 'less than one truck per week'. Product: about 21 t/yr of Nd, Pr, Tb and Dy oxides (>99%) fed to metallization, producing about 20 t/yr of metals and alloys. | Announced | Aug 2024 |
Narrative
Rare Earth Salts was founded in Beatrice, Nebraska in 2012 and holds US patents on an electrochemical separation method that does not use solvent extraction. At its Beatrice plant, described by the company in 2023 as a commercial demonstration plant, it runs two lines: one recovers terbium, yttrium and europium oxides from recycled fluorescent-lamp phosphor, and the other separates lanthanum, cerium and NdPr from a light rare earth concentrate. The company has published no capacity; its stated output is hundreds of kilograms of NdPr, 'many metric tons' of lanthanum and a single 17.5 t lanthanum sale. In September 2024 the Department of Defense awarded it $4.22 million to expand terbium oxide production from recycled lamps. A University of North Dakota project would make separated oxides and metals at Beatrice from rare earth carbonate recovered from North Dakota lignite; the Department of Energy selected a UND demonstration project for award negotiations in July 2026 without naming RES, and that project's February 2026 environmental finding includes refining at Beatrice. Its chief executive testified to a House committee in June 2025; the company's website names Tomoharu AS as its largest outside shareholder.
Where public sources disagree
- Facility size differs by source. The UND/RES proposal to the North Dakota Industrial Commission (14 Apr 2023) says RES maintains '25,000 ft2 of commercial facility and laboratory spaces.' RES's BusinessWire release (22 Aug 2023) describes a '50,000-square-foot headquarters, commercial demonstration plant, laboratory, and research & development facility.' 50,000 is twice 25,000.
- Scale wording differs within the company's own release. The Aug 2023 BusinessWire headline announces 'Commercial Scale Production' and calls RES 'the only commercially scaled NON-Solvent Extraction (SX) heavy rare earth element separation company in the world'. The same release calls the Beatrice site a 'commercial demonstration plant'. No throughput or annual output figure is given.

How this page is sourced
Everything here comes from public sources — company filings, annual reports, exchange announcements, government releases and trade press. Every figure is linked to the document it came from and carries the date that document was published, because a capacity number without a date is not a fact, it is a rumor with a decimal point.
What is deliberately absent: material nonpublic information. I have spent more than two decades in this industry and a good deal of what I know about these companies I learned under NDA. Those obligations do not expire and they do not bend for a website. Nothing I have been told in confidence appears here in any form, and nothing on this page — or missing from it — should be read as a signal about what I know privately. I hold NDAs absolutely. It is the reason clients tell me things.
Judgment is the other thing left out on purpose. This page reports what has been published and who published it. Whether a target is credible, whether a ramp will hold, whether a capacity figure survives contact with the plant behind it — that is the work I do for clients, and it does not belong in a free reference page.
Where public sources disagree, I say so rather than picking a winner. Where a figure has not been published, the field says so rather than carrying an estimate. An empty field is information too.
Public filings tell you what a company has said. Whether it holds up is a different question, and the one I get hired to answer.
