AML's CEO told MINING.COM in Feb 2026 that the company operates at pilot scale, while an IonicRE ASX report describes AML's 'existing 20 tpa sintered, and 200 tpa non-sintered magnet plant'.
The May 2026 DLA award is a US$2 million, two-year qualification contract, not a production order; sintered N48SH and N35EH grades were still being qualified as of that date.
Of the three feedstock partners named in AML's DLA release, only Ionic Rare Earths confirmed the relationship in its own filing; AML called Momentum only a 'likely supplier', and no Phoenix Tailings or Momentum release naming AML was found.
AML's 'full-scale manufacturing 2026' target is stated as dependent on domestically sourced materials and suitable alloy compositions, and its 2023 plan for partnership-led scaling in 2024 has not produced an announced site.

Narrative

Advanced Magnet Lab was founded in 1995 to build superconducting magnets for particle accelerators and moved into permanent magnets in the late 2010s, switching to its own process, PM-Wire, in 2018. In PM-Wire, magnet alloy powder is packed into a non-magnetic tube, compacted and shaped continuously, and sintered for sintered grades; the company holds US patents on the method, including one granted in February 2026. A pilot line completed in 2022 with Defense Innovation Unit funding makes sintered and non-sintered product, and in May 2026 AML won a $2 million, two-year Defense Logistics Agency contract to qualify US-made sintered NdFeB in grades N48SH and N35EH. The company's April 2026 summary lists 20 t/yr of sintered and 200 t/yr of non-sintered capacity and targets 1,000 t/yr sintered in 2028 and 5,000 t/yr after 2028, with no expansion site announced. Ionic Rare Earths has reported binding agreements to supply NdPr and dysprosium oxide to AML and shipped first batches in mid-2026; AML also names Phoenix Tailings and Momentum as suppliers. A 2022 note round was led by American Resources through ReElement.

Where public sources disagree

Ionic Rare Earths' quarterly report (31 Jul 2026) says AML 'has announced plans to develop more than 5,000 tpa sintered permanent magnet manufacturing capacity by 2028'; AML's own one-pager (Apr 2026) gives 1,000 t/yr sintered in Phase III (2028) and 5,000 t/yr sintered only in Phase IV (post-2028). The 2028 figures differ by 4,000 t/yr sintered.
AML's Dec 2023 release says its two Florida facilities have 'approximately 200 metric tons per annum' of permanent-magnet capacity; its Apr 2026 one-pager gives existing Phase I capacity of 20 t/yr sintered plus 200 t/yr non-sintered, i.e. 220 t/yr, on the same 'existing footprint across two facilities'.
Innovation News Network (31 Oct 2023) reports the robotic PM-Wire line runs at 2-6 m/min; AML's NDIA presentation (17 Jan 2024) gives 3-6 m/min per production line.
Headcount: the SBIR.gov firm record lists 6 employees; Crunchbase lists 11-50 employees. Neither gives an as-of date.
